MIXED CASE : WINE LOVER 2

Each case contains one bottle of the following wines:

Rolet Crémant du Jura Blanc Brut NV, AOC Crémant du Jura, Jura, France. $37
During his presidency of the Société de viticulture du Jura, Pierre Rolet was instrumental in the creation of the AOC Crémant du Jura in 1995. The current NV Crémant du Jura Blanc Brut is from 2020, fermented in stainless with no MLF, and spends at least 2 years sur lattes before disgorged (date noted on the case) with 4 g/L. Based on chardonnay (50%), with savagnin, trousseau, poulsard, and pinot noir filling out the rest. This comes off estate vineyards in Arbois, Passenas, and Le Vernnois. Crisp green apple, bright lemon, fresh almond is kissed with meringue on the brisk, shining palate finishing with a slick of salinity. Quite lively at present, and a lovely evolution of style for the house.

Maçanita Branco 2022, DOC Douro, Portugal. $30
Siblings Antonio and Joana Maçinata work together on this Douro Valley project. This Branco blends viosinho, arinto, and gouveio, mostly from the Baixo Corgo (80%), with the remainder from the Cima Corgo and from vines between 580-700m on granite and schistous soils. This was whole bunch pressed, then fermented and aged in stainless for 6 months, on lees. A beauty brace of crushed stones is filled with wild lemon, green fig, crunchy pear, all dosed with ample stony salinity, and held taut with steep acidity. There's an alluring white tea texture to this medium bodied white, adding to its interest. Drinking very smartly now, and over the next couple of years easy.

JM Sohler Pinot Gris Grand Cru Winzenberg 2022, AOC Alsace, France. $34
Winzenberg Grand Cru rests between 240-320m, south and south-east facing, on pink granite soils laced with mica and feldspar. Super perfumed, with lovely rosewater, starfruit, perfumed pear across a full, cushy palate, all held taut with lofted, structural acidity, and finishing long and saline. Lovely pedigree here, drinking now and with time ahead.

Niepoort NAT'Cool! Rosé NV, DOC Douro, Portugal. $33
NAT’Cool is Dirk Niepoort's line of wines that are low-intervention, low-alcohol, available only in a 1L format, affordable, and highly smashable. Showcasing their embossed NAT'Cool! bottles, this new rosé is a mixed field blend from the Douro, as well as a mix of recent vintages. Pouring a blush peach hue, this medium bodied rosé opens with red florals, geranium, crunchy mirabelle plum, and meadow grasses on a silken, stony palate, finishing with a dusting of spice. This glides easily long the palate, fitting easily into the smashable NAT’Cool! framework. Drink now.

La Soeur Cadette Juliénas 2023, AOC Juliénas, France. $41
Born into a family of vignerons, Valentin Montaney sources grapes from across Bourgogne and Beaujolais for his negociant La Soeur Cadette wines. Valentin wanted to highlight the lesser-seen Juliénas cru in this bright and joyous red. This blends two sites, one on blue granite and one on sandy soils, with vines averaging 80 years. This was whole cluster fermented in concrete and then into older barrels for 8-10 months’ rest. Perfumed plum, juicy raspberry floods a buoyant palate, with a fine buzzy granitic underlay. Tannins are long and fine, framing this fine boned wine through a scrubby herbal finish. Drinking beauty now. #GoGamayGo.

Elena Fucci SCEG 2022, DOC Aglianico del Vulture, Basilicata, Italy. $35
In 2016, Elena Fucci, responsible for saving her family’s high altitude, volcanic soiled vineyards and solidifying the appellation with her singular Titolo cru, began another passion project, SCEG (translation pomegranate), to help out friends of her 94-year-old grandfather Generoso. To preserve their vines and tradition, she makes this special wine from his friends’ vines, four parcels near her family’s vineyards, and vines ageing 70+ years. SGEC (pronounced Sheg) is organically farmed Aglianico, spending one year in 500L tonneaux and 6 months in bottle before release. Wild herbs, wild black fruit flood this structural palate, infiltrated with fragrant violets and smoky quartz, lit with mountainous acidity, and framed with firm, sticky tannins which draw this to a saline end. A beauty Aglianico, primed for enjoyment now, though able to hold in your cellar over the next couple of years easy.
