MIXED CASE : TUSCAN REDS 13

Each case contains two bottles of the following wines:

Tenuta Il Palagio When We Dance Chianti 2022. $30
Tuscany's Villa Il Palagio has been a vine growing and wine making estate since the 16th century. For the last two decades it's been the summer home of Sting and Trudy Styler, who have transformed the estate into a vibrant organic farm and vineyard. Over that time, they've worked with consultants Alan York and Pedro Parra to design the vineyards and farming practices. This Sangiovese is splashed with Canaiolo and Colorino, and was fermented and aged in stainless for six months. This medium bodied wine is open and welcoming, with morello cherry, red florals, crunchy plum, a lick of leather, and fine dried herbs. Acidity is bright, and tannins are fine, guiding this to a lightly peppered and amply saline finish. Ready for cracking now, ideally with a simple tomato sauced pasta.

Podere 414 Morellino di Scanscano 2021. $36
Owned by Simone Castelli, Podere 414 is a certified organic estate with 13 hectares of vines, situated in western Tuscany, straddling a river near Scansano. From the region's very stony soils, this Morellino (Sangiovese) is splashed with Colorino, Ciliegiolo, Alicante, and Syrah. Each variety is vinified separately before the blend goes into two-year-old barriques for one year, followed by additional bottle age before release. Wild flowers and scrubby herbs infuse a dusky palate of black cherry, blackberry, inky violet and crushed stones. Acidity is bright and lofty, and tannins are ample but softened with some time, providing a firm hug to this full bodied wine. The finish lingers with medicinal cherry rung with ample salinity.

Donatella Cinelli Colombini Leone Rosso 2020. $29
Leone Rosso was created in 1998 when Donatella’s family gave her Fattoria del Colle in Trequanda. She decided to dedicate her first wine to her ancestors, who in 1592 built the estate. Hers was a historic Sienese family who had in the coat of arms a lion, from which this wine took its name. This 60% Sangiovese / 40% Merlot blend comes from the DOC of Orcia, situated between Montalcino and Montepulciano, and has spent a few months in medium / large oak. Juicy and succulent ripe red fruit fills a cushioned palate, with long, firm tannins to house and a kiss of balsam to season.

Fanti Poggio Torto 2022. $26
The Tenuta Fanti estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the beginning of the eighteenth century. It extends across 300 hectares in Toscana, 52ha of which are specialized certified sustainable vineyards. The name Poggio Torto (leaning hill) comes from the irregular shape of the hill Poggio d’Arna, that is in front of the winery. This blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah comes from young vines rooted in schist and clay. It was fermented in stainless before 4 months in oak barrels, 50% in barriques of 3hl, and 50% in big oak barrels of 50 hL. Ripe blackberry, cherry, boysenberry floods the generous palate, framed with ample soft and sticky tannins which take this to an herbal finish. Best enjoyed with grilled pork / veg.

Lanciola Chianti Colli Fiorentini 2021. $20
In Greve, in the heart of the Chianti Classico area, the winery has 14 hectares, 10 of which are devoted to vineyards sitting on shale soils at approximately 300 meters. This organically farmed Sangiovese is splashed with 10% of other local grapes, and fermented in stainless before resting in concrete. Dried and fresh cherry, perfumed raspberry is scented with dried florals, and framed with finely grippy tannins through the bitter edged finish. Nice freshness throughout.

Le Ragnaie Troncone 2021. $30
Montalcino has an altitude limit in Brunello; it's not allowed to grow above 600m. This organically farmed Sangiovese is grown from 620-655m altitude, hence it fell into the declassification of IGT Chianti Colli Senesi. In 2014, the wine was too pale and wasn't even approved for that, so Riccardo Campinoti said BASTA and labelled the wines IGT Toscana Rosso. Troncone means stump, and was the nickname of Riccardo's grandfather. There is also a large stump in the sandstone, limestone and clay vineyard, giving this wine's name a double meaning. Ragnaie is the name of the vineyard, Etruscan for spiderweb, and reflecting the label and the netting that Etruscans would use to catch small birds. This 14 year old organically farmed sangiovese was native fermented and on skins for 2 weeks in concrete, before one year in older Slavonian oak casks. Alluring from first whiff, with salted cherry, fragrant raspberry, worked leather and dried scrubby herbs stretching across a lifted palate, framed with firm, fine tannins, and buoyed by effortless lofty acidity, finishing with a flush of peppery spice. There's such a lovely ease and grace to this medium bodied youthful wine. Enjoy liberally.
