Suertes del Marqués

Suertes del Marqués
La Solana

La Solana is a single 1.5 hectare vineyard in northern Tenerife, between 350-450m and on clay atop volcanic soils. The family operation Suertes del Marqués organically farms 80-150 year old listán negro here, in the traditional cordón trenzado training system, employing minimal sulphur. After a native ferment in concrete, with 50% whole cluster, this aged 11 months in older French foudres before being bottled unfiltered. After a wave of reduction blows off, this opens into black cherry, black raspberry, broken earth on a scrubby, resinous, balsamic kissed palate. Tannins are long and fine and slightly sticky / gritty, hugging this textural wine through the lingering peppery finish. Such a singular, powerful (at 12.5%) wine.

“La Solana can be freely translated as "the sun drenched" and is always the first plot of Listán Negro to be picked, but I didn't know what to expect of the 2019 La Solana, because the 2018 was completely different from previous vintages, much more elegant and balanced. This fermented with 50% full clusters and indigenous yeasts in concrete vats with a 24-day maceration, and it matured in a second-use 4,500-liter oak foudre and used 500-liter barriques for 13 months. 8,000 bottles were produced. It was bottled in December 2020. Drink 2022 - 2027.” - 93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, February 17, 2022.
