Donatella Cinelli Colombini Il Drago e le 8 Colombe 2019

From Trequanda’s Fattoria del Colle, at 400m on hills of predominantly limestone and sandstone comes this Supertuscan blend of Sangiovese (60%), and equal parts Merlot, and Sagrantino. This was vinified in stainless before 18 months in large barrels and in 5-7 hl French oak tonneaux. The 8 doves (Colombe) on the label represent this groundbreaking female-led winery, while the dragon represents Donatella's beloved husband Carlo.

“Dark and brooding in the glass, the 2019 Il Drago e le 8 Colombe grumbles up with a blend of plum sauce, dusty dried flowers, rosemary, and crushed ashen stones. This soothes with its silky, round textures and ripe red and black fruits. A stimulating acidity and sour citrus hints add a pinch of tension toward the close. It finishes with chalky tannins that add poise without tiring the palate, as balsamic spice nuances slowly taper off. Il Drago e le 8 Colombe always stands out at tastings with its blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot, and 20% Sagrantino. "In the bottle with the red label, the organic Donatella Cinelli Colombini 2019 Il Drago e le 8 Colombe is a blend of 60% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 20% Sagrantino. This is a wine of big grit and density, and although the tannins are resolved and slightly dusty in texture, there is enough structure to pair with steaks or pork chops. The bouquet offers black plum and sweet blackberry pie that is contrasted against a savory or slight spicy side. Drink date: 2024-2029. 92 points, Monica Larner, robertparker.com
